LEAD
Being a leader at school and within a classroom entails a variety of things. Within my classroom it means to always be positive even though it may be difficult at times and teaching my students how to be leaders within the school community. I can also be a leader to my fellow co-workers by sharing resources with them, to always be reflective on my teaching, and by being a Life-Long Learner.
As a leader to my students it means to always be a positive role model for them. Some days are tough and it can be difficult to be positive but a great gift we can give our students is to always be positive in how we treat them as well as how they see you treating your co-workers. It also means being positive when it comes to doing the different subjects and activities within the subjects. I know at times it is sometimes hard to get excited to teach Science because Physical Science is not my favorite subject. When it is time for science and I hear the sighs I tell them just wait, you haven’t seen my lesson yet. We are going to have fun just you wait and see. It seems that when I go into it positively they are more willing to participate and want to see what I have planned.
Another way to be a leader within the classroom is to teach my 8th grade students how to be leaders at school. One way we do this is by learning how to recycle. We have a tub in our classroom and in there we place all of our water bottles and any other plastic bottles that can be recycled. When we turn in our recycling for money we have used it for items we need in our classroom. Recycling though, is not about earning money it is about us being aware of our environment and helping our environment.
As a leader in the school, it means I can be a provider of resources to my fellow teachers. Being in the teaching program at Loyola Marymount University, I have become aware of a lot of interesting web sites, lessons, and resources that I am always willing to share with my co-workers. They know that I am always willing to share with them everything that I have learned in my classes. I also use what I have learned in class and at workshops in my classroom. I get so excited to come to class to try new activities with my students. They also get excited because it means they will learn the subject in a new way.
Another way to be a leader is to reflect on my teaching. For the past two years I have gotten observed on a regular basis. After my observations, I sit down with my observer and reflect on my lesson. She always wants to know in my opinion what I felt worked in the lesson and what could be improved. This has allowed me to be reflective not only on the lessons I am being observed on but on other lessons as well. I have written this down in my lesson plans so I can plan for the upcoming years.
Lastly, I can be a leader by being a Life-Long Learner myself. As teachers, we are always saying we need to teach our students to be a Life-Long Learner but that should first start with us, being the example for our students. Being a Life-Long Learner means to always continue my learning. I can do this by clearing my Teaching Credential and by attending workshops to help improve my teaching.
