Rules, Rules, Rules!
These are our current classroom rules and consequences. During the first week of school, the students came up with their own rules and consequences. So that everyone was in agreement of these rules, I had all of the 8th Grade students sign them. I believe that for the students to create their own rules and consequences creates ownership.
We are each Unique!
During the first week of school each student is given a cutout of a blank person. They are to make the person look like themselves and on the arms and legs draw symbols that represent them. For instance, someone who enjoys playing basketball may draw a basketball somewhere on their body. This helps the students respect all of their classmates and recognize that we are all different but to appreciate the uniqueness in each person.
Class Retreats
The first photo below is from our beginning of the year class retreat. The students had to think of a machine they could act out with their group.
The photo below on the left, is also at our beginning of the year class retreat and some of the students in this activity were unable to use certain body parts. They had to work as a team to put a puzzle together recognizing that some of their group members were unable to see, use a hand, or speak. This really created respect within their groups because they each had to allow the other members in their group speak and direct them.
The photo below on the right, is at an end of the year class retreat and the students are all gathered in a circle listening to one another reflect about their school year.
These class retreat pictures demonstrate how my students at Our Lady of Guadalupe-Rose Hills respect one another while participating in our class retreats.
